ChatGPT Flashcards Explained: Free on Every Plan, on Web and Mobile

ChatGPT can now build you a deck of flashcards, and unlike most of what OpenAI shipped in September this one is free on every plan. The feature landed in OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes on September 22, 2026, with one sentence that settles the only question most people have: "Available on mobile and web for all ChatGPT plans." No upgrade, no trial, no waiting list. Here is what it does, where the cards go, and the one place OpenAI has not said it works.

Do You Get It? Availability

Yes, on every consumer plan, which makes this one of the shortest availability tables this site has published. OpenAI's release note gives one availability sentence and attaches no plan, price or region condition to it.

Two honest gaps in that table, both of them OpenAI's silence rather than a restriction:

• The desktop app is not named. OpenAI says "mobile and web." It does not say the Mac and Windows apps are excluded, and it does not say they are included. If you want this today, open ChatGPT in a browser or on your phone.
• Workspace controls are not addressed. On Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, a workspace admin can turn features off. "All ChatGPT plans" is OpenAI's wording; your admin's settings still sit on top of it.

How ChatGPT Flashcards Actually Work

You ask, and you get a deck you can flip through in the chat. There is no separate flashcard mode to find and no template to fill in.

OpenAI describes two starting points:

1. From a topic. Ask for flashcards on something you want to learn. "Make me 20 flashcards on the Krebs cycle" is the shape of it.
2. From your own material. Upload your notes and ask ChatGPT to turn them into flashcards. This is the more useful route if you are revising from a lecture handout, a textbook chapter or your own messy notes, because the cards come from the material you are actually being tested on.

Once the deck exists, OpenAI names four things you can do with it:

• Tap a card to flip it and see the answer.
• Mark that you knew it, which moves you on.
• Mark it to "practice it again later", which keeps it in rotation.
• Shuffle the deck "to practice in a different order," so you are not just memorising the sequence.

Then OpenAI adds the part that makes it usable more than once: "Flashcards are automatically saved in your library." You can reopen a deck from there, or, as OpenAI puts it, "ask ChatGPT to review them back" in a new conversation. Nothing has to be exported and nothing expires at the end of the chat.

Flashcards, Quizzes or Study Mode? What to Use When

ChatGPT now has three separate ways to revise, and they are not interchangeable. This is the comparison OpenAI does not publish.

The practical split: use quizzes to find out what you do not know, flashcards to drill what you got wrong, and Study Mode when the answer is "I do not understand this at all yet."

Flashcards and quizzes are both free on every consumer plan. Study Mode is the older feature and we are deliberately not restating who has it: the plan list in OpenAI's 2025 announcement names a plan OpenAI has since retired, so it is a source for what Study Mode does, not for who gets it today.

If you use Google's side instead, the equivalents are scattered across products rather than sitting in one chat. Flashcards appear in the Gemini student hub and in the interactive learning overviews inside Gemini Notebook, which is built around documents you upload rather than a conversation.

What OpenAI Has Not Said

Three things are missing from the announcement, and each one matters if you were planning to replace an existing app.

No spaced repetition. The single feature that makes Anki and Quizlet work is a schedule: the app decides which cards you see today based on how you did last time. OpenAI's note describes marking a card to "practice it again later" within a session. It says nothing about review schedules, daily queues, streaks or reminders. Until it does, treat this as a deck you drill when you remember to, not a revision system that chases you.

No sharing or export. Nothing in the note covers sharing a deck with a classmate, publishing one, printing it or exporting to another app. Decks live in your ChatGPT library.

No card limit. OpenAI publishes no maximum deck size and no daily generation cap. On Free that is worth knowing but not relying on, because generating a large deck still consumes your normal message allowance.

Should You Care?

Use it if you are a student, and use the notes route. Uploading your own handout and getting a deck back is the version of this feature that saves real time. Typing cards out by hand is the part everybody skips, and this removes it.

Use it if you are learning a language or a professional exam syllabus. Vocabulary and definition drilling is exactly what flashcards are for, and free on the Free plan means there is nothing to weigh up.

Do not cancel your flashcard app yet. If you rely on spaced repetition, ChatGPT does not replace it, and OpenAI has not said it intends to.
