Claude Docs and Claude Slides Explained: Cowork Is Now Part of Claude, and Who Gets It

By 7 min read

On September 16, 2026, Anthropic merged Claude Cowork into ordinary Claude chat and launched Claude Docs and Claude Slides. The merge is rolling out to Pro and Max over the coming weeks, with Free and Team later. Docs, Slides and Design are beta features for paid plans only. Nothing to turn on.

Context for this story

Anthropic changed what the Claude app is on September 16, 2026. Claude Cowork, the separate mode for handing Claude bigger jobs, is gone as a separate thing: "Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude." At the same time Anthropic launched Claude Docs and Claude Slides, which make documents and presentations inside a conversation, and put Claude Design into ordinary chats too. If you pay for Pro or Max, the change reaches you over the next few weeks with nothing to turn on. If you use Claude for free, the merge comes later and the new document tools do not come at all for now.

Key Takeaways

  • One Claude instead of two modes. Anthropic says "what Cowork and Design can do is available from any conversation," and Claude decides whether your request is a quick answer or a longer task.
  • Pro and Max first, over "the coming weeks." Web, desktop and mobile, existing and new users. "Team and Free plans will follow soon." Enterprise admins get at least 30 days' notice.
  • Claude Docs and Claude Slides are new, and they are paid. Anthropic says Docs, Slides and Design "are in beta on paid plans." Its pricing page marks "Claude Design, Slides, Docs" as No on Free and Yes on Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x.
  • Slides download as PowerPoint or PDF. You can also edit directly, present straight from Claude, and share one link that opens on your phone.
  • Nothing you made in Cowork is lost. Tasks, projects, connectors, skills, artifacts and files carry over; old tasks sit in Recents.
  • It is one-way. Once your account moves, you "can't switch back to separate 'Chat' and 'Cowork' options."
  • Some things move or stop. The web search toggle is gone, Research moves to a command, branching a conversation is not available, and incognito chats open in the old experience.
  • Bigger tasks cost more of your limit. Everything counts toward your plan's usage, and file-making, code-running tasks "generally use more than a quick question."

Who Gets What, and When

This is the table most people need. Everything in it is from Anthropic's announcement, its help article on the change, and the plan matrix on its pricing page, all read on September 16, 2026.

Your planChat and Cowork mergedClaude Docs, Slides, DesignPrice

Two practical points. The rollout is staggered even within a plan: Anthropic says "even accounts on the same plan will see the changes at different times," so a colleague having it and you not is normal. And the Free plan's timeline covers the merge, not the document tools. The pricing matrix is the surface that states plan inclusion, and it puts Docs, Slides and Design on paid plans only.

How to Tell If You Have It

Look at the box you type into. Anthropic's help article gives the test: "If you're on a Pro or Max plan and your message box still shows 'Chat' and 'Cowork' options, you don't have it yet." Until then, keep using both as before; Anthropic says you can do "most of what's in this article" the old way.

When your account moves, you do not do anything. Your chats, tasks, projects and settings come with you. There is no way back: once you have the new experience, separate Chat and Cowork options do not return.

What Claude Docs and Claude Slides Actually Do

Claude Docs makes what Anthropic calls "living documents you write with Claude and your team." You ask for a document, and "you and Claude write it together." Claude Slides makes presentations: "Ask for a presentation, and Claude drafts the slides." Claude Design, which already existed as its own tool, "makes on-brand visuals and mockups" and now works inside conversations as well.

What you can do with the result, per Anthropic:

You want toCan you?
Edit it yourselfYes, "edit directly," or select an element and move it
Ask Claude to change itYes, tell Claude what to change, or leave a comment for Claude on a slide
Present itYes, "present straight from Claude"
Take it elsewhereYes, download as PowerPoint or PDF
Share itYes, everything "lives at one shareable link you can open on your phone"

All three are labelled beta. If you already use Claude Design on its own, Anthropic says "it keeps working as before."

What Changes in the App You Already Use

Most of the change is that you no longer pick a mode. Ask a quick question and you get a quick answer; describe a bigger outcome and Claude works through the steps, searching the web, reading files and running code, and hands back finished files. A few settings and features moved or stopped, and these are the ones that will trip people up. All are from Anthropic's help article.

If you used toNow
Find Cowork tasks in CoworkThey are in Recents, with your chats
Set Cowork's Global instructionsPart of Instructions for Claude in Settings, then General. Check they still say what you want
Turn web search on or off"There's no web search toggle. Claude searches the web when it helps"
Start ResearchType /deep-research, or click + below the message box and choose Research
Find files Cowork savedFiles Claude creates appear beside the conversation; on desktop, look for Storage folder in Settings
Branch a conversation from an earlier pointNot available
Add files from GitHubNot supported
Use incognito chatsThey still work but open in the previous experience, so Claude "can't create files or run code in them"
Search old Cowork tasksSearch does not include them; find them by name in Recents
Use DispatchNot available to new users; existing users can keep it "for now"

Claude keeps working when you walk away. Anthropic says longer tasks "keep running in the cloud even if you close your laptop or leave the page," and a task you start at your desk shows up on your phone. The exception: "Tasks that use files or apps on your computer need Claude Desktop open."

You choose how much it asks first. A permission setting in the message box has two positions. Manual, the default, means "Claude asks before it takes actions." Auto means Claude "keeps working without stopping to ask about each step," with automated safety checks before each action. Anthropic's own advice for anything that sends messages or changes important files is to "stay close and review what Claude does."

Does It Use More of Your Limit?

It can. Anthropic's help article is direct: "Everything you do with Claude counts toward your plan's usage limits. Longer agentic tasks that search the web, run code, or create files generally use more than a quick question." It also says that during the rollout, "usage may be measured slightly differently for accounts that have it and accounts that don't."

So the thing to watch on Pro is not the price, which has not changed, but how quickly a few document or slide requests eat into your allowance. Check Settings, then Usage after your first few. If you keep hitting the ceiling, Max starts at $100 a month on Anthropic's pricing page, and our guide to which AI chatbot is worth paying for covers whether that is the right move or whether a different $20 plan fits better.

What About Memory and Privacy?

Memory carries across, with one exception. Anthropic says "Claude uses what it remembers from your chats in the tasks it works on for you," but "memory from Cowork tasks that ran only on your computer stays with those tasks." How Claude's memory works in general is covered in Claude memory, explained.

Computer control is still opt-in and still beta. Claude can use apps on your computer by clicking and typing "in beta on Pro and Max plans," can read a folder only if you give it one, and "by default it asks before permanently deleting any files." All of that works only while Claude Desktop is open.

Should You Do Anything?

Do nothing if you mostly chat. Anthropic's own line is "If you mostly use chat, you don't have to do anything different." The change arrives on its own.

Check your instructions if you used Cowork. Your Cowork Global instructions have been folded into the general Instructions for Claude setting. Open Settings, then General, and make sure the combined text is what you want applied to every conversation.

Try Slides on one real deck if you pay for Pro. It is included in what you already pay, and the PowerPoint download means you are not locked in. Watch your usage while you do.

Do not upgrade from Free just for Docs or Slides yet. They are labelled beta, and the merged experience has not reached Free. If you are weighing Claude against the alternatives, see the best free AI chatbot in 2026 first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Claude Docs free?

No. Anthropic says Claude Docs, Claude Slides and Claude Design are in beta on paid plans, and its pricing page marks all three as not included on Free and included on Pro and both Max tiers. Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually.

What happened to Claude Cowork?

It became part of normal Claude. Anthropic says everything Cowork did is now available from any conversation, with no separate mode. Your Cowork tasks, projects, connectors, skills, artifacts and files carry over, and old Cowork tasks appear in Recents alongside your chats.

How do I know if I have the new Claude?

Look at the message box. Anthropic says that if it still shows separate Chat and Cowork options, your account has not moved yet. The rollout is gradual, so two people on the same plan can get it on different days. There is nothing to switch on.

Can I switch back to separate Chat and Cowork?

No. Anthropic's help article says that once your account has the new experience, you cannot switch back to separate Chat and Cowork options. Your chats, tasks, projects and settings move over with you.

Does the new Claude use up my limits faster?

Bigger tasks do. Anthropic says everything counts toward your plan's usage limits, and longer tasks that search the web, run code or create files generally use more than a quick question. You can check what you have left in Settings, then Usage.

Can Claude keep working after I close my laptop?

Yes, for tasks that run in the cloud. Anthropic says involved tasks keep going if you close your laptop or leave the page. Tasks that use files or apps on your own computer need the Claude Desktop app to stay open.

When does the Free plan get this?

Anthropic has not given a date. It says Team and Free plans will follow soon, after Pro and Max. Even then, its pricing page lists Claude Docs, Slides and Design as paid-plan features, so Free users should not expect those three.
