Google released a Gemini app for Windows on September 10, 2026. It is a real desktop program rather than a browser tab: press Alt + Space anywhere in Windows and Gemini opens on top of whatever you were doing. Google says it is out globally on the day of launch, and its own download page puts the floor at Windows 10 or later. Downloading it costs nothing. If you have a Windows PC running Windows 10 or newer and you can already use Gemini in a browser, yes. Google put no waitlist, no region list and no staged rollout on this one. The download page answers the country question directly: "The Gemini desktop app is available in all languages and countries where Gemini app is supported." The launch post calls it "available today globally." That is unusually clean for a Google launch, and it is the opposite of how Gemini in Chrome arrived.

The one number to watch is the Windows version. Google's blog post says "Windows 10 and 11" and both its download page and its Gemini release notes say "Windows 10 or later." Those agree on the floor, which is the part that decides whether you can install it. If you are on Windows 8.1 there is no version of this for you.

Google's Windows help article, read on September 11, 2026, adds two requirements that appear nowhere in the launch post or on the download page: 8 GB of RAM or more, and at least 200 MB of free disk space. The RAM floor is the one that will actually stop people, because plenty of working Windows 10 laptops shipped with 4 GB. Then there is the awkward part. The two capabilities Google chose to lead its announcement with are both behind a plan.

Footnote 1 in Google's post reads, in full: "Google AI subscription required. Availability varies. 18+." It is attached to Gemini Spark and to Gemini Omni and to nothing else. For Spark, Google has been specific elsewhere: its September 9, 2026 plan roundup describes Spark handling "web errands" and photo work as "available with AI Pro and Ultra in the U.S." Spark also remains blocked outright in the UK, the EEA, Switzerland and Nigeria, so a Windows app does not change that answer for a British reader.

And there is a prior question about Spark on Windows that Google has not answered cleanly. Its Spark help article, read September 11, 2026, says Spark is "only available in the Gemini mobile app, the Gemini app on Mac, and the Gemini web app at gemini.google.com" -- Windows is not on that list, and the word does not appear on the page. What It Actually Does

Google describes three uses in its launch post, and they are worth separating because only the first is what most people will use daily.

Answer without breaking your flow. Alt + Space puts Gemini over your active window. Google's example: "Whether you need a quick fact-check on a document or a few catchy title ideas for a presentation, you can get the help you need and jump right back into your workflow." The shortcut is customizable in settings, and the app also sits in the taskbar and system tray.

Work inside a dedicated window. The app has a full Gemini workspace, not just the pop-up. Google: "Inside the new app, you can access everything you use Gemini for already." That includes handing multi-step work to Gemini Spark, and asking Gemini to draft something by pulling from Gmail, Drive, Docs and Calendar.

Make images and video. Nano Banana for images and Gemini Omni for video, both from the desktop rather than a browser tab. Google's framing: "You can generate custom images with Nano Banana for a presentation, direct a high-quality video with Gemini Omni, and best of all you can do it all in one convenient place."

Google also makes a performance claim worth holding it to: "Lightweight and quiet, the app runs without slowing down your PC."

What the Mac App Still Does That Windows Does Not

Three things, and Google lists them plainly on its own download page as macOS capabilities, followed by: "More native capabilities will roll out to Windows over time." No date is given for any of them.

So the honest summary for a Windows reader is that this is version one. Google says so itself: "This is just the beginning for the Gemini app on Windows, with more native desktop capabilities rolling out over time."

How to Install It

1. Go to gemini.google/desktop and choose Download for Windows.
2. Install and sign in with the Google account you already use for Gemini. Your existing chats and memory appear.
3. Press Alt + Space to test it. If that shortcut is taken by something else on your PC, change it in the app's settings.
4. If you want it in your taskbar, pin it there. The app also puts an icon in your system tray.

You do not need to disconnect anything or turn anything on to get the basic app. Connecting Gmail, Drive, Docs and Calendar is a separate step inside Gemini, and it is the same connection you would set up on the web.

The desktop-app race is now genuinely competitive, and each one is trying to be the thing you press a shortcut for.
