Gmail AI Overviews Explained: Who Gets Them Now, and How to Turn Them Off

If you pay for a Google AI plan and live outside Europe or Japan, your Gmail search bar can now answer questions instead of just listing emails. Google's Workspace team announced on September 15, 2026 that AI Overviews in Gmail search are expanding from US-only to global, and that the rollout to personal Google Accounts has been under way since September 3, 2026. What Gmail AI Overviews Actually Do

They turn a Gmail search into a question you can ask. Instead of typing keywords and scanning a list of messages, you type a plain question or phrase into the search bar, and Gmail shows a short written answer above the normal results. Google's help page says the overview can "give you the key fact or summarize information directly above your search results," "synthesize information scattered across multiple emails to provide a complete answer," and save you opening individual messages.

Google's own examples are the useful kind: "When is my next appointment?", "What's the check-in code for my rental?", "Summarize my upcoming trip", "Show me my concert tickets", "Track my latest return", "Confirmation number for my flight tomorrow". On a phone you tap Expand to read the whole overview and Minimize to collapse it, and there are Good suggestion and Bad suggestion buttons for feedback.

Two things it will not do. If you use a search operator such as from: or is:unread, Google says "the AI Overview isn't available." And on Android and iPhone, the overview does not show if another card, such as a flight tracker or a summary card, is already at the top of your results.

Do not confuse this with the free summaries Gmail already shows at the top of long threads. When Google announced Gmail's Gemini features on January 8, 2026, it said "AI Overview conversation summaries are rolling out today for everyone at no cost," while "the ability to ask your inbox questions with AI Overviews is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers." Who Gets It, on Which Plan, in Which Country

The country list matters because it is the change. Google's help page, as archived on August 4, 2026, said "This feature is only available in the US and in English." The live page now says only "in English" and adds the regional-exclusion list. So a paying subscriber in Canada, Australia, India, Brazil or Nigeria who searched Gmail last month and saw nothing may see an answer box now. A paying subscriber in Germany, France, Ireland, the UK, Switzerland or Japan will not, and Google has not said when or whether that changes.

The plan list also moved, earlier and more quietly. The January announcement named Pro and Ultra; the April 2026 Workspace post that brought it to business accounts still listed consumers as "Google AI Pro and Ultra"; the help page by August and the September post both include Plus. If you pay $4.99 for AI Plus mainly for Gmail Live, this is a second Gmail feature on the same plan.

How to Turn Gmail AI Overviews Off

You turn off Gmail's smart features, and this goes with them. There is no separate switch for AI Overviews alone. Google's help page gives these steps and adds a warning worth reading first: "If you turn off smart features, it also turns off other AI-powered Workspace features, like the Gemini in Gmail side panel."

On the web: open Gmail, click Settings (the gear) at the top right, then See all settings. Under the General tab, scroll to Google Workspace smart features and click Manage Workspace smart feature settings. Turn off Smart features in Google Workspace, then click Save.

On Android: open Gmail, tap Menu at the top left, then Settings, pick the account, and under General tap Google Workspace smart features. Uncheck Smart features in Google Workspace.

On iPhone and iPad: open Gmail, tap Menu, then Settings, then under General tap Data privacy, then Google Workspace smart features, and tap Done when you have switched it off.

What you give up is more than the answer box. If you only dislike the overview, a cheaper fix is to search the way you used to: any search operator, even a simple from:, suppresses it.

Is It Worth Paying For?

Not on its own, but it is a real perk if you already pay. AI Plus at $4.99 a month is Google's cheapest AI plan, and Gmail search overviews now sit alongside Gmail Live and higher Gemini limits on it. If your inbox is where your travel confirmations, receipts and appointments live, asking "what is my hotel confirmation number?" and getting the number is a genuine time saver.

Do not upgrade for this if you live in the EEA, UK, Switzerland or Japan (you will not get it), if your Gmail is not set to English, or if you search with operators anyway. Try it first if you already have AI Plus, Pro or Ultra: type a full question into the Gmail search bar and see whether an overview appears. If it does not after a few weeks, Google's rollout is gradual and there is nothing to switch on.
