GPT-6 Astra Explained: It Is in ChatGPT Now, as GPT-6 Pro, on Two Plans

GPT-6 has arrived in the ChatGPT app, under a different name and only on the paid-professional plans. OpenAI's help page for GPT-5.6 and GPT-6 Pro, updated September 16, 2026, states it in one line: "GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, is available in ChatGPT for Pro $100, Pro $200, Business and Enterprise plans." So the model people first heard about on September 3 is now selectable in ordinary chat, if you pay $100 a month or more. On ChatGPT Plus it is still confined to ChatGPT Work and Codex, and on Free and Go it does not appear at all. It also carries hard weekly message caps, which is the part most coverage leaves out.

Do You Get GPT-6 Astra? Availability by Plan

Only if you pay $100 a month or more, for the chat app. OpenAI now publishes the answer as a named product, GPT-6 Pro, rather than as a rollout stage. Its help page, updated September 16, 2026, lists four plans and no more. Here is every consumer plan, read on September 17, 2026:

The gap between Plus and Pro is the thing to notice. Plus pays $20 and gets Astra in OpenAI's work and developer products; Pro pays $100 and gets it in the chat window as well. That is a five-fold price step for the surface most people actually use.

The GPT-6 Pro Message Limits, in One Table

This is the part that decides which Pro tier is the right number for you, and OpenAI publishes it plainly. It has not yet published a GPT-6 Pro allowance for Pro 500, the $500 tier it added on September 29, 2026; the table below is the one OpenAI published for the two older tiers. GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro are both "Pro models," and how they share an allowance differs by plan:

Two consequences OpenAI spells out. On Pro $100, switching between GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro "does not provide more messages once that shared allowance is exhausted," so the 50 is a single budget rather than two. On Pro $200, hitting the weekly GPT-6 Pro cap does not lock you out: "ChatGPT automatically switches to GPT-5.6 Thinking at Medium," and Sol Pro stays selectable while its own daily allowance holds.

And the sentence worth quoting to anyone about to spend $200: "A Pro subscription does not include unlimited use of the GPT-6 Pro model."

What GPT-6 Astra Is For

Astra is built to finish a whole job rather than answer a question. OpenAI describes it as combining "advanced reasoning, computer use, and stronger judgment," and the example it gives is telling: "carry out a workflow, check the result, and produce a document, spreadsheet, or presentation that fits your templates and task." That is a description of software doing several hours of someone's work, not of a chatbot being wittier.

OpenAI's own guidance on when to pick it says to choose Astra "for complete workflows across code, apps, and research that need sustained reasoning and judgment," and to give it "the sources, templates, constraints, and checks that define a useful result." Compare that with what it says about the model most people actually talk to: GPT-5.6 Terra is "the pragmatic all-rounder" for "everyday work." If your use of AI is asking questions, drafting emails and looking things up, OpenAI is not describing Astra to you.

How Much Astra You Get, and What It Costs You

Astra is the most expensive model OpenAI sells per message, and the allowance table is the clearest way to see it. These are OpenAI's estimated local messages per five-hour period on each plan:

Read the top row against the second: a Plus subscriber gets about half as many Astra messages as Sol messages in the same window. In token terms OpenAI prices Astra at 250 credits per million input tokens and 1,250 per million output tokens, against Sol's 100 input. It also notes that "Fast mode applies a 2.5x multiplier to Astra's Standard rate."

The practical version: on Plus, a handful of Astra tasks can consume a five-hour window. That is fine if the task was going to take you an afternoon. It is a bad trade for anything you would have asked GPT-5.6 anyway.

Where It Runs, and Where It Does Not

OpenAI lists Astra's surfaces individually, and one of them is a no. It is available in the ChatGPT desktop app for local chats, ChatGPT Work on the web, the Codex CLI, the Codex IDE extension and through an API key. Codex cloud is marked unavailable. OpenAI adds that "availability depends on the rollout, your sign-in method, and your client," so an eligible plan does not guarantee the model appears in your picker today.

There is also an opt-in experiment attached to it. On supported Codex clients, people signed in with ChatGPT Plus or Pro can turn on experimental context management, where "Astra keeps notes across context windows and can search earlier messages and tool results from the same task." It is off by default, and OpenAI says it "isn't available with Business, Enterprise, or API-key sign-in at launch" -- an unusual case of the cheaper plans getting a feature the expensive ones do not.

What OpenAI Still Has Not Published

Two gaps remain, and both are narrower than they were. OpenAI has now answered the plan question it left open on September 3, so what is left is smaller.

First, there is no statement about Plus, Go or Free ever getting GPT-6 in chat. The September 3, 2026 release note promised "broader availability" over "the coming days," and what actually landed was a named Pro-tier product. OpenAI has not said whether cheaper plans are next, or whether $100 is now the permanent floor for GPT-6 in the chat app.

Second, the model release notes page has still not carried a GPT-6 entry. OpenAI keeps a model release notes page for exactly this class of change. Read through in the newest version available, captured September 27, 2026, its most recent entry is a Model Spec update dated August 18, 2026, and no GPT-6 model appears anywhere on it. That is a fact about that page, not about the product: the GPT-6 Pro availability above comes from OpenAI's own help centre, updated September 16, 2026.

Should You Pay for It?

Almost certainly not, and now for a concrete reason rather than an availability one: the cheapest plan that gets GPT-6 Pro in chat costs $100 a month and gives you 50 messages a week.

Skip it if you use ChatGPT for questions, writing help, summaries, study or search. Nothing on your plan has changed, GPT-5.6 is still the model in your chat app, and the free tier's unlimited text chats are unaffected. Do not upgrade from Plus to Pro for GPT-6 alone. The step is $20 to $100 a month for 50 shared Pro-model messages a week. If your Astra work happens in Codex or ChatGPT Work, Plus already includes it, and the upgrade buys you the chat window rather than the model.

Consider Pro $200 only if you were already hitting GPT-5.6 Sol Pro limits on multi-step work that ends in a real document, spreadsheet or code change. At that tier you get 200 GPT-6 Pro messages a week and an automatic fallback to GPT-5.6 Thinking when they run out, which is the only configuration here that will not interrupt you mid-project.

The bottom line: GPT-6 Astra is real, it is in ChatGPT, and it is priced as a professional tool. For anyone whose AI use is conversation, nothing about this release asks you to do anything.

Corrections and Updates

October 8, 2026: this page said GPT-6 Luna reached Free and Go in chat on October 8. That is announced, not confirmed: OpenAI's help article, re-read October 8, says GPT-6 in Chat is rolling out "to eligible Pro, Plus, Enterprise, and Business users" and that "Free and Go users receive GPT-5.6 Luna". The mention has been softened; nothing else on this page is affected.

October 7, 2026: this page said GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6 Luna and GPT-6.1 Sol were all "in ChatGPT Work and Codex only." Two of the three are not any more: OpenAI's October 7 announcement put GPT-6 Sol into the Chat tab for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise that day and GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go from October 8. GPT-6.1 Sol remains Work-and-Codex-only. Nothing this page states about Astra or GPT-6 Pro changed.

September 29, 2026: ChatGPT Pro gained a third tier, and this page assumed two. OpenAI's release notes introduced Pro 500 at $500 a month, described as carrying "the highest included usage of the Pro plans" plus Astra Ultrafast in ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI has published no GPT-6 Pro chat allowance for it, so the limits table above still covers Pro $100 and Pro $200 only, and this page does not state what Pro 500 gets in chat. The $100 entry price is unchanged.

September 17, 2026: this page said GPT-6 Astra was "not yet generally available" and not in ChatGPT. That is no longer true. OpenAI's help page, updated September 16, 2026 and retitled "GPT-5.6 and GPT-6 Pro in ChatGPT" (renamed again to "GPT-6 and other models in ChatGPT" on October 7, 2026), puts GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, in ChatGPT for Pro $100, Pro $200, Business and Enterprise, with published weekly message allowances. The title, summary, Key Takeaways, availability table and verdict have all been rewritten, and the per-plan allowance table is new. The September 3 release note's "not yet generally available" wording is kept only as the history of the rollout.

September 5, 2026: this page originally said OpenAI's consumer help centre had said nothing about GPT-6. That was wrong.
