Gemini Live: What It Is, Whether It's Free, and What It Can See

Gemini Live is the mode where you talk to Gemini out loud instead of typing, and it can look through your phone's camera or at your screen while you do. Google lists it in the Free plan's feature set on its subscriptions page, so there is no plan to buy. What there is instead is a set of quiet limits Google spreads across four different pages: it does not run on a computer, it is 13-plus, Android gets more of it than iPhone does, and your transcripts and your recordings are governed by two separate settings that point in opposite directions.

What Gemini Live Actually Is

It is a spoken conversation with Gemini that you can interrupt. Google's description on its Gemini Live overview is that you "tap the Live icon to start a conversation and feel free to interrupt or change the subject whenever you want." Since the May 19, 2026 update, Live is built into the ordinary chat rather than sitting beside it: you can start typing, switch to voice, and switch back, and Google says "all of your context, tools, and conversation history stay right where they belong -- in one continuous thread."

Two things separate it from a normal voice assistant. It keeps going without you re-prompting it, and it can look at things. While you talk, Google says Gemini shows you "visual information in real-time like maps, weather cards, and photos." Point your camera at something and, per the same page, you can say "reimagine this" and get an edited image back from Nano Banana.

Is Gemini Live Free? Availability by Plan

Yes, on the free plan. Google's subscriptions page lists Gemini Live among the things a Free account gets, alongside image generation, Deep Research, Canvas and Gems. Nothing in the Gemini Live help article mentions a subscription. What paid plans buy is usage headroom across Gemini generally, not access to Live.

One caveat Google prints on the overview page and which is worth taking at face value: "Compatibility, availability, and age restrictions vary. Some features require setup or subscription." Individual pieces inside Live, like the personalization described further down, do carry their own limits.

What You Need to Use It

A phone or tablet, the Gemini app, a Google Account, and to be over 13. Google's help article is unusually direct about the desktop question: "For now, Gemini Live isn't available in the Gemini web app." On Android it adds that Live is also missing from Gemini in Google Messages.

Google's separate Gemini mobile app availability page fills in the rest. The app itself is available "in multiple languages and more than 150 countries." An account for someone under 13 needs a parent's approval before it can use the app. On Android the hardware bar is a phone or tablet "with 2 GB of RAM or more, running Android 9 and up," and Android Go does not support the Gemini app at all. You also cannot use the Gemini app inside an Android Work Profile.

Two language notes, both from Google. The Gemini mobile app does not currently support Farsi. And in the app's supported-language list, a large number of entries are starred, meaning that "language does not support 'Hey Google' voice commands and some Gemini action features" -- so the voice launch phrase below is not universal even on Android. Google publishes no separate country or language list for Gemini Live specifically, and on the overview page says only that "soon, we'll start offering regional dialects."

What Android Gets That iPhone Does Not

Four things, and Google never says so out loud -- the Android and iPhone versions of the Gemini Live help article are simply different documents. Comparing them side by side is the only way to see it.

The practical read: on an iPhone, Gemini Live is a thing you open the app to do. On Android it is closer to a system assistant you can talk to hands-free and leave running. Neither article promises the other platform's features are coming.

What Gemini Live Can See

Your camera and your entire screen, but only while you have those switched on. Google documents both inside a Live chat, on Android and on iPhone alike.

• Camera. Tap Camera to share it, tap it again to stop, and tap the switch control to flip between the front and rear lens.
• Screen. Tap "Turn on screen sharing." Google's warning is explicit: "When you share your screen, your full screen is shared with Gemini." Screen sharing needs Gemini Live notifications switched on for your device.

So the camera can quietly reactivate when you resume a held Live chat, and screen sharing never does. If you want either off for good, end the Live session rather than pausing it.

Google also asks something of you here rather than of itself: "Respect others' privacy and ask permission before recording or including them in a Live chat."

What Google Keeps, and What It Trains On

This is the part that surprises people: transcripts and recordings are treated differently, and the defaults point opposite ways. Both rules come from the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, last updated July 15, 2026.

Google's wording on the first row: "If Keep Activity is on, transcripts of your Live chats are used to improve Google services, including AI models." On the second: "Your Gemini Live audio, video and screenshares are not used to improve Google services by default."

If you do switch that second setting on, Google says some of that audio and video "are reviewed by human reviewers," with the activity sent to service providers not connected to your Google Account. Two further admissions in the same section are worth reading before you turn on any voice launch phrase: Gemini waits in standby until it hears something like "Hey Google," and "audio recordings may begin a few seconds before activation" -- and "Gemini can activate accidentally, like if it detects a noise like 'Hey Google.'" Those accidental recordings are used to reduce future misfires.

What Gemini Live Can Do With Your Other Apps

It can act inside a published list of apps, and the list shrinks hard on a work account. Google names the Connected Apps and services usable inside a Live chat: Google Calendar, Google Home, Google Hotels, Google Flights, Google Tasks, Google Keep, Google Workspace, image generation, Shopping, Spotify, Utilities, YouTube and YouTube Music, plus phone-maker apps including HONOR, Lenovo, OnePlus, OPPO, Samsung, TECNO, Vivo and Xiaomi calendars and notes. Gemini can also use public Google Maps information in Live chats without you connecting anything.

Three limits sit on top of that list:

• Work or school accounts get three apps. Google: "If you're signed in to a work or school Google Account, only Google Calendar, Google Keep, and Google Tasks can currently be used in Gemini Live chats." Anything else has to be enabled by your Workspace administrator first.
• You cannot always undo. If Live is open on screen you can tap Undo or ask Gemini to undo. If Live is running in the background, Google says you cannot undo at all, and you cannot undo actions in Samsung apps either -- you have to go and fix it in the app.
• The rollout is staged. Google flags that Connected App support in Live "is being released gradually and may not be available to you yet."

What Does Not Work in Live

Gems, Notebooks, Omni and Lyria. Google's help article says "for now, Gems can't be used with Gemini Live," and its Gemini Live overview extends the list: "Gemini Live does not have access to Gems or Notebooks. Additionally, Gemini Live does not support Omni or Lyria. If you ever need to use any of these specific features, simply close the voice screen to return to the standard typing window."

This is worth knowing before you build a workflow around a custom Gem and then try to use it hands-free. The fix is not a setting; it is leaving Live.

Should You Use It?

Use it if you want an assistant while your hands are busy -- cooking, driving, walking, or standing in front of something you cannot describe in words but can point a camera at. That last case is the one Live genuinely does better than typing, and it costs nothing to try.

Use Android's version if you have the choice. The gap is real: voice launch, Pixel Buds, background running and lock-screen continuation all live on that side.

Turn Keep Activity off if the transcripts bother you. That drops your Live chats to 72 hours of storage and takes them out of Google's service-improvement pool. Your audio and video are already excluded by default, so the transcript setting is the one that actually changes anything.

Skip it if you work on a desktop. There is no web version, and Google has not said one is coming. The bottom line: Gemini Live is one of the few genuinely capable AI features that is free on every plan, and the real cost is not money. It is a camera, a screen and a microphone your assistant can reach, governed by two settings most people never open.
