ChatGPT for Teens Explained: Who Gets It, What Changes, and How to Get Out

If a 14-year-old in your house uses ChatGPT, the app changed under them last week and nobody had to agree to anything. On August 18, 2026 OpenAI introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a separate version of ChatGPT for under-18 accounts, and the thing to understand first is that it is not something you switch on. OpenAI's wording: "If our system estimates someone is under 18 or they state their age is between 13 and 17, they are automatically placed into ChatGPT for Teens."

That cuts both ways. If you are a teenager, your app now has study tools, break reminders and content limits you did not ask for. If you are an adult and OpenAI's age-guessing model gets you wrong, you are in the teen version until you prove otherwise. What Is ChatGPT for Teens?

It is the same ChatGPT with a different set of defaults, aimed at people aged 13 to 17. OpenAI describes it as "the same capable ChatGPT, designed to help teens learn, work through problems, and explore new ideas", with three things layered on: learning tools, prompts that push toward balanced use, and content safeguards that are on by default rather than optional.

In everyday terms, a teen account gets a different first-run experience, a nudge toward Study Mode when it looks like homework is being outsourced, and a model that refuses a wider set of things. Nothing about the underlying assistant is downgraded, and OpenAI does not describe any limit on message volume or model access. The differences are behavioural.

Do You Get It? Availability by Plan and Country

Availability is broad and it is not tied to paying. OpenAI's help article states that "ChatGPT for Teens is rolling out globally to eligible teen accounts on Free and paid personal ChatGPT plans beginning August 18," with one named exception: "Full availability in Australia is expected September 8."

Two honest caveats OpenAI states itself. It is a staged rollout -- "If you do not see these teen-specific features in ChatGPT yet, they may not be available for your account. We will continue to expand availability over the coming weeks." And "feature availability may vary by region," which OpenAI does not break down further. Beyond Australia and the EU note above, OpenAI has published no country list, so nobody should be quoting one.

How ChatGPT Decides You Are a Teenager

This is the part most coverage skips, and it is the part that affects adults. There are three routes into the teen experience: the age on your account, an age you verified, or OpenAI's age prediction model. The help article names all three: "account-provided age information, verified age, or age prediction."

Age prediction is a guess made from how you use the app. OpenAI says it "looks at different signals linked to your account. For example, it may look at general topics you talk about, the times of day you use ChatGPT, how and when your account is used, and how long your account has existed."

The consequential sentence is this one: "Age prediction is an extra safety check. It can apply the teen experience even if you already gave your date of birth when you created your account." Typing 1985 into a signup form does not settle it. OpenAI also concedes the obvious: "No system is perfect. Sometimes ChatGPT may get it wrong."

Age prediction "is rolling out globally", with the EU lagging "in the coming weeks to account for regional requirements". There is one country-specific rule OpenAI publishes: in Italy, if ChatGPT asks you to verify your age you have 60 days to do it, after which "certain features may be disabled until you verify your age."

What Actually Changes in a Teen Account

Two groups of changes: things added, and things withheld.

That last row is the strongest single commitment in the launch. OpenAI says its updated under-18 model spec "goes beyond blocking romantic or sexualized roleplay: ChatGPT should not use romantic language, encourage emotional dependence, or imply that it has feelings or consciousness."

The ad exclusion is worth noticing too, because it is the one place where the teen version is straightforwardly better than the adult free version. What Parents Can and Cannot See

Parents can shape the account. They cannot read it. OpenAI states the limit twice in the same help article: "Parental controls do not let a parent or guardian read or monitor the teen's conversations," and again in its FAQ, "No."

Linking is optional and it is the teen's account that must accept it. OpenAI is adding notifications related to eating disorders to the existing safety-notification set, "while limiting what is shared and focusing on moments when offline support may matter most". When a notification does fire, OpenAI says "it shares only the information needed to help support the teen's safety."

One rule that surprises parents: only the teen can verify their own age. OpenAI's guidance for a parent whose child was moved out of the teen experience too early is to talk to them about doing it themselves -- "Parents and guardians cannot verify a teen's age on their behalf."

How to Get Out: Age Verification for Adults

If you are 18 or over and ChatGPT has put you in the teen experience, you verify your age and the protections come off. You do not have to -- OpenAI says "You do not need to verify your age to keep using ChatGPT with teen protections" -- but this is the only route out.

1. Sign in to ChatGPT on the web.
2. Open Settings.
3. Under Account, check whether your account is in the teen experience.
4. Select Verify age. (Or go straight to chatgpt.com/verify_age while logged in.)
5. Follow the steps with Persona, the third-party company OpenAI uses for this.

Persona may ask for a live selfie, a government ID, or both, depending on your country. Accepted IDs include a passport, driver's licence or state or provincial ID, national ID card, residency permit or employment authorisation card. OpenAI says you may cover ID numbers such as a Social Security number before uploading -- only your full name, date of birth and face photo need to be visible.

On the privacy side, the split is clear and unusually favourable:

• Persona deletes your uploaded ID or selfie within 7 days after verification.
• OpenAI does not receive your ID or selfie. It receives "your date of birth or an age prediction", nothing more.
• Verifying stops the guessing. "If you do not want OpenAI to predict your age, you can verify your age with Persona. After you verify, OpenAI will not run age prediction on your account."

What Happens When a Teen Turns 18

The account flips to adult settings, and the parental link is cut with it. OpenAI's help article on the transition says ChatGPT "may notify the account holder about 7 days before teen protections are scheduled to be removed," and will notify a linked parent too.

If the change fires early and the account holder is genuinely still under 18, the same age-verification flow is the fix, and OpenAI says teen protections may be kept or restored as a result. Adults who want some guardrails back have three options OpenAI names: Reduce sensitive content, setting up parental controls again, or adding a Trusted Contact. OpenAI is explicit that Reduce sensitive content "does not restore all of the protections that were previously in place for teen accounts."

Should You Do Anything?

If you are a parent of a 13-to-17-year-old: check whether the account is actually in it. The rollout is staged, so it may not have landed. The genuinely useful controls here are Study Hours and Quiet Hours, and neither exists unless you link accounts, which the teen has to accept. Go in expecting a scheduling tool, not a monitoring tool -- you will not be able to read anything.

If you are a teenager: nothing to do, but know what changed. Your account has content limits and study nudges it did not have before, your phone-usage patterns are one of the signals OpenAI reads, and ads that reach other free users will not reach you.
