Siri AI Explained: How to Get It, Who Is Locked Out, and What Apple Will Charge For

Siri AI is out. Apple released iOS 27 on Monday, September 14, 2026, and its rebuilt assistant is rolling out inside it as a free beta, in English only, on every iPhone from the 15 Pro up. Three groups do not get it on their phone: EU residents, anyone in China, and anyone under 13. And the launch-day footnotes say the quiet part in the present tense: Siri AI and the other server-side features "are subject to daily usage limits," and "expanded access to such features will be available for a fee in the future." That is the first time Apple has attached the word fee to Apple Intelligence itself, and it is the part of this launch worth reading twice.

Which iPhones Get Siri AI

Every iPhone that already runs Apple Intelligence, and no others. Apple did not raise the hardware floor for the new assistant, which is the single most reassuring fact in this launch: an iPhone 15 Pro bought in 2023 gets the same Siri AI as an iPhone 18 Pro bought next week.

Apple restated the same list in its September 14 launch post: "iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max," plus iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPads and Macs with M1 or later, MacBook Neo, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple Watch Series 9, Ultra 2 or SE 3 when paired with a supported iPhone. Two extras still need newer hardware than the rest, and Apple lists both in the footnotes of that page: customising how Siri sounds and the improved on-device Dictation model are limited to iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air. Neither is Siri AI itself.

Who Is Locked Out

Four groups, and Apple names all four in writing. If you are in one of them, installing iOS 27 does not get you Siri AI.

On the EU, Apple adds one sentence of explanation and no date: "Apple is working hard to find a path forward that preserves its users' privacy and security." The exclusion is by operating system, not by person: the launch post says "Mac and Apple Vision Pro users in the EU will be able to access Siri AI when set to a supported language," so an EU Mac owner gets Siri AI while the same person's iPhone does not.

The under-13 rule is new. Apple's June 2026 announcement of Siri AI contains no age restriction at all. Apple's new usage terms add that "age restrictions may vary by region" and that Apple "reserves the right to modify age restrictions at any time."

What Siri AI Actually Does

Five things the old Siri could not do, per Apple's launch-day description. This is what Apple has committed to in writing; the beta label means it may not all work on day one.

• Conversation instead of commands. Open-ended questions, "detailed responses and rich, natural conversations," and follow-ups on almost any answer, typed or spoken.
• Personal context search. Siri AI can search "messages, emails, photos, and more." Apple's example: ask what a relative suggested doing during a visit, and Siri finds the message, pulls the recipe from an old email and adds the ingredients to Reminders.
• Actions inside apps, including other companies' apps. Apple says it already works with apps like WhatsApp and Audible, and that drafting an email in Microsoft Outlook, searching Notability or adding a restaurant to Tripsy is coming "soon."
• Onscreen awareness and Visual Intelligence. Ask about what is on your screen, or point the camera at something in the new Siri mode of the Camera app. On iPad it lives in the screenshot tool, on Mac behind a keyboard shortcut.
• Write with Siri. Describe what you need and Siri drafts it, almost anywhere you can type. In Mail and Messages it can match how you usually write to that person.

Conversations live in a dedicated Siri app and sync across your Apple devices through iCloud. Apple also says Siri AI can "go out to the web to get up-to-date information," which is the feature that puts it in the same category as the AI assistants you may already pay for. Under the Siri AI section of Apple's page sits a four-word line that matters more than the marketing above it: "Usage limits may apply."

One more launch-day fact answers a question a lot of people will type: Apple says the models behind Siri AI are "the next generation of Apple Foundation Models, custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models." They run on your device and on Apple's Private Cloud Compute, and Apple says that when its servers handle a request, "personal data is not stored nor made accessible to Apple or anyone else."

The Part About Paying

Apple published two new support documents on September 9, 2026, and together they say Apple Intelligence will not stay free at unlimited volume. This is the substantive change from June, and it has had almost no plain-English coverage. The launch-day press releases repeat it, and tighten the tense: server-side features "are subject to daily usage limits," and "expanded access to such features will be available for a fee in the future."

The usage limits page lists the features involved:

If you reach a limit in a particular feature, that feature will become available again after a time out period. Increased access to such features will be available for a fee."

The same page says that "starting with the 2027 software releases, users can experience the next generation of Apple Intelligence, with enhanced access to features that rely on server-side models."

The companion Apple Intelligence Usage Terms, also published September 9, 2026, make it binding: "Current and future Apple Intelligence Features may be subject to usage limits... Apple reserves the right to modify which Apple Intelligence Features are subject to limits and the applicable usage limits at any time." Reaching a limit means the feature "may become unavailable or the functionality of such feature may be limited until the applicable usage limit resets."

What changed since June is as important as what Apple said on launch day. In its June 2026 announcement, Apple wrote: "Some Apple Intelligence features, including image generation, have daily usage limits because they rely on powerful server models. Increased access is available with most iCloud+ subscription plans." That sentence has been replaced. The Apple Intelligence page and all three of the September 14 press releases now say instead that expanded access "will be available for a fee in the future," and iCloud+ appears in the footnotes only for Home camera video summaries.

What this means for you, in one line: no bill yet and no price to plan around, but Apple has now told you in its own words that the free version has a ceiling and that going above it will cost money.

Should You Update to iOS 27

Update if your iPhone is a 15 Pro or newer, you use English, and you are outside the EU and China. It is a free update, Siri AI is free at launch, and there is no announced downside beyond beta software behaving like beta software.

Wait if you are in the EU on iPhone, or in China. Siri AI is not coming to your phone in this release, and Apple has published no date, so updating buys you the rest of iOS 27 and none of the headline feature.

Do not buy a new iPhone for this. The assistant is identical on a three-year-old iPhone 15 Pro and a brand-new iPhone 18 Pro. The only things $1,199 buys you here are a custom Siri voice and better dictation. If your phone is older than the 15 Pro and you want a capable assistant today, the best free chatbots run in any browser on any iPhone and cost nothing.

Watch the fee. Apple has committed to charging for increased access without naming a price, a limit or a date. Nothing you can do about it now, but treat "Apple Intelligence is free" as a statement with an expiry date on it.

September 15, 2026: step 2 of "How to Get Siri AI" said Apple Intelligence needs "about 7 GB of free space." Apple rewrote that requirements page on September 14, 2026, retitling it "How to get the next generation of Apple Intelligence," and replaced the single figure with up to 8 GB on most supported iPhones, up to 14 GB on an iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max or iPhone Air, and up to 1.5 GB on Apple Watch.
