Is Gemini Free? What the $0 Plan Actually Gives You
Yes. Gemini is free with any Google Account, and the free plan is more generous than most people think: Deep Research, Canvas, Gems, image generation and music generation are all included. What $0 does not buy is video generation, Daily brief, scheduled actions, and the ability to pick which model answers you.

Gemini 4 Argon Explained: You Can Use It Now, and Google AI Pro Is Enough
Gemini 4 Argon reached the Gemini app on October 13, 2026. You need Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month or Ultra; the free tier and the $4.99 AI Plus plan do not get it. Google also turned on a chat-to-tasks toggle for both paid plans.

The Best Free AI Chatbot in 2026
Google Gemini is the best free AI chatbot for most people in 2026: solid models, image generation, and Deep Research at no cost. But free ChatGPT has unlimited text chats, and OpenAI's release notes put it on GPT-6 Luna from October 8, 2026, so pick it if you chat in long sessions. Free Claude quietly gives you Sonnet 5.5, new on September 28, 2026.
Yes, and you do not need a card, a trial or an invitation. Open the Gemini app or go to gemini.google.com, sign in with the Google Account you already have, and you are on the plan Google labels Free, $0 / month with a Google Account. This page is about the part people actually want to know: where the free plan stops.
Everything below was read on Google's own pages on October 19, 2026 -- the subscriptions page, the feature availability table and the models page. Google changes these without announcements, so the dates matter.
Key Takeaways
- Gemini is free with any Google Account. No trial, no card, no expiry.
- Deep Research is free. So are Canvas, Gems, Skills, Storybook, Connected apps, audio overviews, quizzes and flashcards, slide generation, screen automation, image generation and music generation. That is eleven of the sixteen features in Google's own table.
- Five things are paid: video generation, Daily brief, scheduled actions, redoing images with Nano Banana Pro, and early access to features.
- Tasks in Gemini needs AI Pro or Ultra -- the $4.99 AI Plus plan does not get it either.
- You cannot choose your model on the free plan. Paid plans get a model picker; free gets "Auto or Flash-Lite".
- The free context window is 32,000 tokens, against 128,000 on AI Plus and 1 million on AI Pro and Ultra. This is the free plan's hardest edge, and the one you hit with long documents.
- The free plan can go down as well as up. Google moved it from Gemini 3.6 Flash to 3.5 Flash-Lite on October 9, 2026 with no announcement of any kind.
What You Get for Free
The $0 card on Google's subscriptions page lists nine things, and read live on October 19, 2026 it reads: access to "our Flash-Lite model", image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, Google Flow, Gemini Notebook, and 15 GB of cloud storage shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos.
Google's feature availability table is the more precise surface, because it gives a yes or no per plan for sixteen named features. Decoded on October 19, 2026, here is the free column in full:
| Feature | Free ($0) | AI Plus ($4.99) | AI Pro ($19.99) | AI Ultra (from $99.99) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canvas | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Skills | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Storybook | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Connected apps | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Quizzes and flashcards | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Audio overviews | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Screen automation | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Slide generation | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Deep Research | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Image generation with Nano Banana 2 | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Music generation | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Daily brief | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Redo images with Nano Banana Pro | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Video generation | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Scheduled actions | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Tasks in Gemini | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Early access to features | No | Priority access to some new features | Yes | Yes |
Eleven of sixteen on the free plan is a lot, and the eleven are not the leftovers. Deep Research runs a multi-step search and writes you a report; Canvas is the side-by-side editing surface; audio overviews turn your documents into a two-host conversation. None of that costs anything.
One row is worth reading twice. Tasks in Gemini is the only feature in the table that the $4.99 AI Plus plan does not get. If that agent is what you are paying for, $4.99 is the wrong number and $19.99 is the right one.
Which Model Does the Free Plan Get?
Flash-Lite, and on the free plan you do not get to choose. Google's models page gives the free tier "Auto or Flash-Lite", where every paid tier gets a list you can pick from:
| Plan | Models you can use in chat | Models in Tasks |
|---|---|---|
| No Google AI plan | Auto, or Flash-Lite | None |
| Google AI Plus | Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro | None |
| Google AI Pro | Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro, Argon | Flash, Argon |
| Google AI Ultra | Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro, Argon | Flash, Argon |
"Auto" is doing more than it looks. Google's footnote on that table says that with auto model selection on, "most prompts will use Flash-Lite for quick answers," but "prompts that require more reasoning may use Flash or Pro" -- so a free user's hard question can be answered by a better model than the one their plan nominally lists. Turn auto off and "all responses will use Flash-Lite." The setting is at Settings, then Usage limits.
What you cannot do for free is insist. There is no free route to Gemini 4 Argon, Google's current top model, and no free route to picking 3.1 Pro for a specific prompt.
Google stopped printing version numbers on its plan page this month. The free card read "Access to 3.5 Flash-Lite" in the Internet Archive's capture of October 13, 2026 and reads "Access to our Flash-Lite model" today; every tier lost its version number in the same rewrite, and the models page names them without versions too. The model family is the same. What is gone is Google telling you which version of it you are on.
Where the Free Plan Actually Runs Out
Usage limits, and Google expresses them as multiples of the free plan rather than as a number of prompts. From the limits article:
| Plan | Usage limit | Context window |
|---|---|---|
| No AI plan | Standard limits | 32,000 tokens |
| Google AI Plus | 2x standard | 128,000 tokens |
| Google AI Pro | 4x standard | 1 million tokens |
| Google AI Ultra | 5x or 20x AI Pro, by price | 1 million tokens |
The context window is the sharper limit, and it is the one to decide on. 32,000 tokens is roughly 50 pages. Upload a long report, a book chapter or a year of statements on the free plan and Gemini cannot hold all of it at once. On AI Pro it holds about 1,500 pages. No amount of patience gets you around that; it is the one free-plan ceiling that is a hard wall rather than a queue.
Google also says which prompts burn your allowance fastest, which is useful if you are trying to stay free: a short chat message is "very low" cost, ongoing conversations and large file analysis are "medium", and Deep Research and video generation are "high". Deep Research being free but expensive is why your limit can vanish in an afternoon.
If you do hit the limit on a paid plan, Google says "your chat will continue with Flash-Lite" -- you are not cut off, you are demoted.
Is Gemini Free in Google Search?
Yes, and this is the part most comparisons get wrong. AI Mode in Search needs no plan at all, and Google's AI Mode help page lists it in 248 countries and territories and 98 languages, counted October 19, 2026. The EU is included.
What money buys in Search is the better model inside AI Mode, and there it is strict: Gemini 4 Argon in AI Mode is limited to "Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers 18 and above", in 122 countries and territories, and not one of the 27 EU member states is on that list, nor Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein. So if you are in the EU, the free version of AI Mode is the only version available to you at any price.
Should You Pay?
Stay free if you use Gemini for questions, writing help, research, study materials and the occasional image or song. That is most people, and the free plan covers it properly rather than grudgingly.
Pay $4.99 for AI Plus if you keep running out of allowance, or you want video generation and Daily brief. It is a volume upgrade with two features attached. It does not get you Tasks.
Pay $19.99 for AI Pro if any of three things is true: you want to pick your own model including Argon, you work with documents too long for a 32,000-token window, or you want Tasks in Gemini. This is the tier where the free plan's real limits lift.
Skip Ultra unless you know why you need it. At $99.99 it buys 5x AI Pro's limits, and at $199.99 it buys 20x. The only feature it holds exclusively is Deep Think, the highest reasoning setting, which Google's help page restricts to Ultra subscribers 18 and over, calls "an experimental capability", and says it may "discontinue or suspend... at any time without prior notice."
Students should check the Google AI student offer before paying anything. And if you are comparing across vendors rather than across Google's own tiers, our best free AI chatbot ranking and ChatGPT vs Gemini comparison are the places to start.
Two Things to Know Before You Trust the Free Plan
Google moves features between tiers without telling anyone. On October 9, 2026 the free plan's model went from Gemini 3.6 Flash to 3.5 Flash-Lite, and 3.6 Flash moved to the $4.99 tier. There was no release note, no blog post and no in-app notice: the plan page simply read differently between two Internet Archive captures taken fourteen hours apart. Whatever is free today is the floor of what you are promised, not a commitment.
Free does not mean private. The free plan is the one whose data settings most people never open. If you would rather Google's AI stayed out of your mail, that is a separate set of switches and we have written them up: how to turn off Gmail's AI features.
The bottom line: Gemini is genuinely free, the free plan does real work, and the two things you are actually buying when you pay are the right to choose your model and a context window big enough for long documents. Everything else is volume.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to pay anything to use Gemini?
No. Google's plan page lists a $0 tier that needs only a Google Account, with no trial period and no card. It includes the Gemini app, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Canvas, Gems, Gemini Notebook and 15 GB of storage shared with Gmail, Drive and Photos.
Which Gemini model do I get for free?
Flash-Lite, Google's fastest and cheapest model. Its help page says that with auto model selection on, most prompts use Flash-Lite but ones needing more reasoning may use Flash or Pro; with auto off, every response uses Flash-Lite. You cannot pick a model yourself on the free plan.
What can the free plan not do?
Five things, per Google's feature table read October 19, 2026: video generation, Daily brief, scheduled actions, redoing images with Nano Banana Pro, and early access to new features. Tasks in Gemini needs AI Pro or Ultra, so even the $4.99 plan does not include it.
Is Deep Research free in Gemini?
Yes. Google's feature availability table marks Deep Research as included on all four plans, free included, and its own plan page lists it on the $0 card. Paying raises how often you can run it, because Google rates Deep Research as a high-cost prompt type against your usage limits.
How much less can I do on the free plan?
Google does not publish a number of prompts. It publishes multiples: the free plan gets standard limits, AI Plus 2x, AI Pro 4x, and Ultra 5x or 20x more than AI Pro. The clearer free-plan limit is the context window, 32,000 tokens against 1 million on AI Pro.
Is Gemini free in Google Search?
AI Mode in Search is free and needs no plan, in 248 countries and territories and 98 languages. The upgrade you cannot buy outside that is the better model inside it: Gemini 4 Argon in AI Mode is AI Pro and Ultra only, in 122 countries, none of them in the EU.
Is the free Gemini plan good enough, or should I pay?
Free is enough if you ask questions, write, research and make the odd image. Pay $19.99 for AI Pro if you want to choose the model, need the 1-million-token context window for long documents, or want Tasks in Gemini. The $4.99 AI Plus plan mainly buys volume and video.
Will Google move features off the free plan?
It already has, without announcing it. On October 9, 2026 the plan page moved the free tier's model from 3.6 Flash down to 3.5 Flash-Lite, and 3.6 Flash onto the $4.99 plan. There was no release note. Treat today's free plan as the floor, not a guarantee.
