Apple's Redesigned Health App Explained: Health Age, $119 Labs, and Which iPhones Get It

Apple announced on September 9, 2026 that it is rebuilding the iPhone Health app around Apple Intelligence. The new app reads your Apple Watch, iPhone, AirPods and medical records, tells you a Health Age, sells you a $119 blood test, and coaches you with videos from Apple's clinicians. It ships "later this year", which Apple's own Series 12 page narrows to late 2026, and only on iPhones that already run Apple Intelligence.

This is the first time Apple has put its AI into the one app that holds your medical data. Here is what it does, who gets it, what costs money, and what Apple has not said.

Do You Get It?

You get the redesigned Health app if your iPhone runs Apple Intelligence and you are willing to wait until late 2026. Apple's availability line is "Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone and iPad models with the latest software, with select features available only on iPhone", and the launch language is US English.

Two more gates from the small print. "Some features require users to be 18 or older", with no list of which. And the perimenopause notifications in Cycle Tracking, which are an iOS 27 feature rather than part of the redesign, are for people 40 and over.

When Does It Ship?

Later this year, and it was not in the September 14 release. iOS 27 and watchOS 27 shipped that day, and Apple's launch post keeps the Health app separate: "The new health capabilities will be available later this year." Apple's Apple Watch Series 12 product page says "Coming late 2026" next to the Health Age description.

Is It Free?

The app has no price and Apple has announced no subscription for it. Three things do cost money, and one is unresolved.

The lab tests are $119 each. Apple's wording is that you "will be able to schedule and purchase new labs that feature over 50 key biomarkers for $119 directly through the Health app at approximately 2,000 Quest Diagnostics locations in the U.S." That is a real price for a real blood draw, not a subscription.

Health Age needs an Apple Watch, and readiness needs a new one. Series 12 starts at $399.

The unresolved part is Apple Intelligence itself. The footnotes on Apple's September 9 and September 14, 2026 press releases say that "certain Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models are subject to daily usage limits" and that "expanded access to such features will be available for a fee in the future". The named examples are Siri AI, photo editing, Image Playground and Shortcuts models, not Health. Apple has not said whether the Health app's summaries count as server-side or on-device. Until it does, treat the app as free and the limits as a possibility.

What Happens to Your Health Data

Apple's privacy claim is specific for the camera tests and general for everything else. On the movement evaluations, the press release says the experience "runs entirely on device; no video is ever recorded, stored, or shared". That is the same shape of promise Google made for Pixel 11 sign-to-text, and it is the sentence to hold Apple to.

For the rest, Apple says the updates keep "personal health data private, secure, and under their control" and that the app "has been built to securely and privately protect a user's data at every step". It does not say, in this announcement, which Apple Intelligence processing stays on the phone and which goes to Apple's Private Cloud Compute servers. That is the question to watch when the app actually ships, because the Insights and Longevity tabs are Apple Intelligence features that read your medical records.

Two medical caveats Apple puts in its own footnotes: the Vitals app "is for wellness purposes only and not for medical use", and the perimenopause notifications "are not intended to replace traditional methods of diagnosis".

How This Compares to ChatGPT Health

Apple is going after the same job ChatGPT Health took on earlier this year, reading your medical records and explaining them, but from inside the app your watch already writes to. The differences that matter to a normal person:

• Apple's version is tied to hardware. Health Age and readiness are Apple Watch features. ChatGPT Health works from whatever records you connect.
• Apple sells the blood test. ChatGPT Health reads lab results you already have, from sources such as Function Health; Apple books and charges for a new draw at Quest.
• Apple's clinicians are on camera. The videos come from "Apple Health clinical experts", which is a different trust model from a chatbot answering in text.
• Apple's is not out yet. ChatGPT Health has been open to everyone in the US since July 23, 2026. Apple's ships late 2026.

Should You Care?

Care a lot if you already own an Apple Watch and an Apple Intelligence iPhone. Everything here lands on your phone for free in a few months, and Health Age is the first Apple health feature that turns years of watch data into one number and a list of what to change.

Do not buy a Series 12 for the Health app. The app does not need it. Buy the watch if you want the readiness score and the five-second heart rate; those are the only parts locked to the new sensors.

Wait if you are outside the US. The app arrives in US English first, the lab service is US-only, and Apple has given no date for anything else.

Ignore it if you are on a standard iPhone 15 or older. Apple Intelligence will never come to that phone, and neither will this app.
