iOS 27.1 Explained: It Is Out, It Is iPhone Duo Only, and Apple Published No Feature List

By 10 min read

Apple released iOS 27.1 on October 23, 2026 and your iPhone almost certainly cannot install it. Apple states the update is available for iPhone Duo only; every other iPhone stays on 27.0.1. Apple has published no feature list for 27.1, and Siri AI is still English only on all four of its own pages.

Context for this story

Apple released iOS 27.1 on October 23, 2026, and you almost certainly cannot install it. Apple's own security-releases page, stamped that same day, lists the update as available for one device -- iPhone Duo -- and states the rule in a single sentence: "The latest version of iOS and iPadOS is 27.0.1, and 27.1 for iPhone Duo only."

So if you checked Software Update today and saw nothing, your phone is fine. There is no update for it.

Key Takeaways

  • iOS 27.1 shipped on October 23, 2026. Apple's security-releases page gives the release date as "23 Oct 2026" and the device as "iPhone Duo".
  • It is for one phone. Apple: "The latest version of iOS and iPadOS is 27.0.1, and 27.1 for iPhone Duo only." Every other supported iPhone and iPad stays on 27.0.1.
  • Apple published no feature list for it. Its release-notes document, About iOS 27 Updates, carries sections for iOS 27 and iOS 27.0.1 and no iOS 27.1 section. The page is still stamped September 29, 2026.
  • No documented security fixes. Apple's entry for iOS 27.1 reads "This update has no published CVE entries."
  • What Apple has described is the SDK, not the update. Its October 22 developer post says developers "can easily adapt their apps for iPhone Duo using new and updated APIs in the iOS 27.1 SDK". That post does not mention Apple Intelligence or Siri once.
  • Siri AI's five promised languages are still not here, on any Apple page. Apple promised "French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish coming in October" on September 14. Four Apple surfaces say English only as of today, including one Apple revised on October 22, 2026.
  • The redesigned Health app did not arrive either. Apple's Apple Watch Series 12 page still says "Coming late 2026".
  • Apple did quietly change something useful on October 22: the Apple Intelligence storage requirement now names the iPhone Duo and "iPhone 17 Pro models and later" in its 14 GB tier, which finally covers the iPhone 18 Pro.

Who Is Affected and What To Do

If you haveWhat to do now
An iPhone Duo (bought today or on pre-order)Install iOS 27.1. It is the version your phone ships on and the only one Apple has released for it
Any other iPhoneNothing. Stay on iOS 27.0.1. iOS 27.1 was never offered to your phone and you are not missing a security fix
An iPadNothing. Apple names 27.0.1 as the latest iPadOS; there is no iPadOS 27.1
You were waiting for Siri AI in your languageKeep waiting, and do not install anything expecting it. Apple's own pages still say English only, with eight days of October left
You were waiting for the new Health appKeep waiting. Apple still says "late 2026" and has given no day

Why iOS 27.1 Is Only for One Phone

Because Apple built it for the iPhone Duo's folding screen, and said so in developer terms rather than consumer ones. Apple's October 22 post about iPhone Duo apps is the one place it describes what 27.1 contains, and it is all about the hardware: developers adapt their apps "using new and updated APIs in the iOS 27.1 SDK", so that apps "adapt automatically to each display, moving controls to the side within easy reach, expanding into multiple columns on the inner display, and nudging buttons away from the fold".

That is a version shipped to support a device, not a version shipped to add features. Apple has done this before with a new form factor, and the practical consequence for everyone else is that the next general iOS update will carry a different number.

VersionWho gets itApple's status
iOS 27All supported iPhones (15 Pro and later for Apple Intelligence; iPhone 11 and later for the OS)Released September 14, 2026

iOS 27.1iPhone Duo onlyReleased October 23, 2026. No published CVE entries, no release notes

What Apple Has Not Published About iOS 27.1

A feature list. This is the part worth knowing, because it is unusual. Apple maintains one document for the whole iOS 27 series, About iOS 27 Updates, and it adds a dated section for each point release. Read live on October 23, 2026, that document has exactly two sections, iOS 27 and iOS 27.0.1, and its own stamp still reads September 29, 2026. There is no iOS 27.1 heading on it.

So the two Apple surfaces that would normally tell you what an update does say, between them: it exists, it is for iPhone Duo, it has no published CVE entries, and here is the developer SDK. Nothing about what changes for a person using the phone.

Press coverage has filled that gap with a feature list. We are not repeating it, because this site's rule is that a claim needs a vendor source, and on this one Apple has published nothing to check it against. If you own an iPhone Duo, your own Software Update screen is currently a better source than anything written about 27.1, including this page.

The Siri AI Language Question, Answered on Four Apple Pages

Apple has not said the five extra languages are available, and the page it revised yesterday still says English. This matters more than the version number, because it is the thing Apple actually promised for this month.

The promise, from Apple's September 14, 2026 launch post, still live and still worded this way: "Siri AI is now rolling out as a beta in English, with support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish coming in October."

Here is every Apple page that states Siri AI's language availability, read live on October 23, 2026:

Apple surfaceWhat it says todayApple's own date on it
How to get Siri AI"Siri AI is currently available in English." French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish each return zero on the pagePublished Date: October 22, 2026
apple.com/ios/feature-availabilityThe Siri AI row, the Write with Siri row, the Visual Intelligence row and the Siri Mode in Camera row each read "Available in English - Not available in China mainland and the European Union"Undated page
apple.com/apple-intelligence footnote"Siri AI is available in beta in iOS 27 ... Available in English to start." No October clauseUndated page
About iOS 27 UpdatesNo iOS 27.1 section, so no language change recordedPublished Date: September 29, 2026

The October 22 revision is the telling one. Apple did edit "How to get Siri AI" the day before 27.1 shipped. We diffed it against the Internet Archive capture of September 24, 2026 and the changes were: iPhone Duo added to the iOS 27 device list, and the Expressive Voices hardware list rewritten from "iPhone 17 Pro models and iPhone 18 Pro models" to "iPhone 17 Pro models and later, iPhone Duo". The sentence "Siri AI is currently available in English" was not touched.

So Apple had that page open, for the iPhone Duo launch, and left the language answer where it was. That is weaker evidence than an announcement and stronger than silence, and with eight days of October left it is the only evidence there is.

One extra detail from the same reading, for anyone who does get Siri AI: Expressive Voices is narrower than the rest of Siri AI. Apple's availability matrix lists it as "English (United Kingdom)" and "English (United States)" only, and its support page says it "requires a device with the AFM Core Advanced on-device model", available on "iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro models and later, iPhone Duo, iPad (M4), or later with at least 12GB of unified memory, and Mac (M3) or later with at least 12GB of unified memory, and Apple Vision Pro (M5)".

The One Change Apple Did Make This Week

Apple widened the Apple Intelligence storage requirement on October 22, 2026, and it closes a gap that affected iPhone 18 Pro owners. Its requirements page, How to get the next generation of Apple Intelligence, moved its stamp from September 14 to October 22 and rewrote the top storage row.

Until October 22, 2026From October 22, 2026
Phones in the 14 GB tier"iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air""iPhone Duo, iPhone 17 Pro models and later, iPhone Air"
Where an iPhone 18 Pro owner landedUnnamed. The 14 GB row did not list their phone and the 8 GB row said "other"The 14 GB tier, by name, via "17 Pro models and later"

Dated by diffing the stripped live page against the Internet Archive capture of October 15, 2026, which still carried the September 14 stamp and the three-phone row.

The same revision added one sentence that is more useful than the numbers: "Storage used by Apple Intelligence may temporarily exceed storage requirements during and shortly after a software update, as new models are downloaded and older ones are removed." In plain terms, 14 GB free is the steady state, not the peak. During an update your phone is holding the old models and the new ones at the same time, so leave more headroom than the headline figure. Our Apple Intelligence compatibility guide has the full storage table.

Should You Do Anything?

If you have an iPhone Duo: install it. It is your phone's shipping software and there is no alternative version for you.

If you have any other iPhone: do nothing, and ignore the version number. You are on iOS 27.0.1 and that is the current release for your device. iOS 27.1 is not a missed update and not a withheld feature; it is a build for a phone you do not own.

Do not install anything expecting the Siri AI languages. Apple has not said they are out, on any of the four pages where it states Siri AI's languages, including one it edited on October 22. If you want French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese or Spanish Siri AI, the thing to watch is How to get Siri AI, one sentence long and the first page Apple will have to change.

Do not wait on the Health app for this release either. Apple still dates the redesigned Health app, Health Age and the Longevity tab as "late 2026" with no day. Our redesigned Health app page has what Apple has committed to and what it has not, and our iOS 27 Apple Intelligence page tracks everything Apple promised for the 27 cycle and whether it has landed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is iOS 27.1 out yet?

Yes, Apple released it on October 23, 2026. But Apple's own security-releases page says it is available for iPhone Duo, and that the latest version for every other iPhone and iPad is 27.0.1. So the update exists and almost nobody can install it.

Why can't I update to iOS 27.1?

Because you do not have an iPhone Duo. Apple's page lists iOS 27.1 as available for that one model, and states plainly that the latest version of iOS and iPadOS is 27.0.1, and 27.1 for iPhone Duo only. Nothing is wrong with your phone.

What is new in iOS 27.1?

Apple has not said. Its own release-notes document, About iOS 27 Updates, lists sections for iOS 27 and iOS 27.0.1 and has no iOS 27.1 section at all. The only thing Apple has described is the iOS 27.1 SDK, which lets developers adapt apps to the iPhone Duo's folding screen.

Did iOS 27.1 add the new Siri AI languages?

Apple has not said so anywhere. Reports say it did, but all four Apple pages that state Siri AI's languages still say English only, including one Apple revised on October 22, 2026. Until Apple changes one of them, treat the five languages as not yet shipped.

What iOS version should my iPhone be on?

iOS 27.0.1, unless you own an iPhone Duo. Apple names 27.0.1 as the latest version for every other supported iPhone and iPad, and the next general update for those phones is expected to be 27.2 rather than 27.1.

Does iOS 27.1 bring the redesigned Health app?

No. Apple's Apple Watch Series 12 page still reads Coming late 2026 next to the redesigned Health app and Health Age, re-read on October 23, 2026. Apple has published nothing new about the Health app since September 9, 2026.

Is iOS 27.1 a security update?

Not a documented one. Apple's security-releases page lists iOS 27.1 with the note that the update has no published CVE entries, which is Apple's wording for a release that fixes no publicly tracked security flaws. iOS 27.0.1 before it was a bug-fix release.

Will skipping iOS 27.1 leave my iPhone behind?

No. You are not skipping anything: Apple never offered 27.1 to your phone. Point releases for the rest of the lineup continue from 27.0.1, so the next update you see will be a later number, with its own release notes on Apple's About iOS 27 Updates page.
