Gemini in Cars Explained: Personal Intelligence on Android Auto, and What It Reads While You Drive
Since October 20, 2026 Gemini works in cars worldwide, on Android Auto and cars with Google built-in, and Personal Intelligence is rolling out there so it can answer from your Gmail, Photos and Maps while you drive. Google names no paid plan: the gates are 18-plus, a personal account, and not the UK or EEA.

Context for this storyGemini Personal Intelligence: What It Reads and How to Turn It Off
Personal Intelligence lets Gemini read your Gmail, Contacts, Photos, Search and YouTube history and, in the US, your Google Wallet to personalize its answers. Since October 20, 2026 it also runs in cars on Android Auto. It is opt-in, per-app, 18-plus, personal accounts only, and blocked in the UK, EEA, Switzerland and Nigeria. Google names no paid plan.
Gemini Connected Apps Explained: The September 2026 Wave and Who Actually Gets Them
Google added a second wave of Connected Apps to Gemini on September 23, 2026: Peloton, Experian, SeatGeek, Apartments.com, Adobe, Picsart, Squarespace, Webflow, Airtable, Linear, monday.com, PandaDoc, Wispr AI and Zoho. All fourteen now have published requirements: Adobe's entry appeared between September 23 and September 29, 2026. Most are US-only, English-only and 18-plus, and none needs a paid plan.
Is Gemini Free? What the $0 Plan Actually Gives You
Yes. Gemini is free with any Google Account, and the free plan is more generous than most people think: Deep Research, Canvas, Gems, image generation and music generation are all included. What $0 does not buy is video generation, Daily brief, scheduled actions, and the ability to pick which model answers you.
Gemini Live: What It Is, Whether It's Free, and What It Can See
Gemini Live is Google's talk-out-loud mode in the Gemini mobile app, and Google lists it under the free plan. You need the app on Android or iPhone and a Google Account, 13 or over. It can see your camera and screen. Transcripts are used to train Google's AI when Keep Activity is on; audio and video are not, by default.
Gemini is in the car now, and on October 20, 2026 Google started letting it read your Gmail from the driver's seat. The announcement says Gemini is "now available globally on Android Auto and cars with Google built-in", and that Personal Intelligence is "rolling out starting today" on Android Auto, with cars with Google built-in following "in the coming months".
What that buys you is specific and quite useful: you can ask "What's my flight gate? And is my flight on time?" and get both answers in one go, because Gemini reads the confirmation email and checks the delay itself. What it costs you is access. Personal Intelligence connects Gmail, Calendar, Photos, Maps, YouTube and Search to the assistant your passengers can also talk to. It is off until you switch it on, it is 18-plus and personal-accounts-only, and it does not work in the UK, the EEA, Switzerland or Nigeria at all.
Key Takeaways
- Gemini in cars went global on October 20, 2026. Google's wording: Gemini is "now available globally on Android Auto and cars with Google built-in."
- Personal Intelligence started the same day, but only on Android Auto. Cars with Google built-in get it "in the coming months", with no date published.
- Google names no paid plan. The gates it publishes are 18 or over, a personal Google Account, and a supported country. "AI Pro" and "AI Ultra" appear nowhere on Google's current Personal Intelligence pages.
- Not in the UK, the EEA, Switzerland or Nigeria. Google's footnote excludes all four by name. Gemini still works in the car there; it just will not draw on your own data.
- Not on a work or school account. Google's footnote says "not for Workspace business, enterprise, or education users."
- It reads six app groups, and you pick them individually. Contacts, Google Photos, Google Wallet (US only), Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Drive), Search services (Search, Maps, Shopping) and YouTube.
- Saying no costs you nothing but the personalisation. Google: "If you don't use Personal Intelligence, everything in the car still works."
- Google's own help pages have not caught up. Two of them still say Personal Intelligence is "only available" on four surfaces, and the car is not one of them. Dated detail below.
Who Gets Gemini in a Car, and When
Two different things shipped on October 20, and only one of them is everywhere. Gemini as a voice assistant is the global part: Google says it is available on Android Auto and on cars with Google built-in worldwide. Personal Intelligence, the part that reads your own data, started rolling out that day on Android Auto only, and Google's sentence for the dashboard version is "in the coming months". If your car runs Google software natively rather than mirroring your phone, you are in the second group and Google has given you no date.
| What you have | Gemini voice assistant | Personal Intelligence |
|---|---|---|
| Android Auto (phone projecting to the car screen) | Available globally | Rolling out since October 20, 2026 |
| Car with Google built-in (software in the dashboard) | Available globally | "In the coming months", no date published |
| Neither | Not applicable | Not applicable |
One caveat sits on Google's help page rather than in the announcement, and it matters more than the word "globally" suggests: "Gemini and Android Auto are not available in all languages and regions." That is on Chat with Gemini in your car, read October 22, 2026. So "globally" describes the rollout, not a guarantee that your country and language are in it.
What Personal Intelligence Adds on the Road
It answers questions you would otherwise have to pull over to answer. Google's own five examples are the clearest explanation of the feature, and they are worth reading as a list of what it has to be able to see to work:
| What you say | What Gemini has to read |
|---|---|
| "What's my flight gate? And is my flight on time?" | Your Gmail (the confirmation), plus a live search |
| "Find me an indoor restaurant along my route that matches my usual vibe." | Your saved places and preferences |
| "Take me to my doctor's appointment." | Your Google Calendar |
| "Find the car wash from the photo I took last week and navigate there." | Your Google Photos |
| "Take me to the coffee shop we were talking about yesterday." | Your previous Gemini chats |
Google describes two underlying abilities: retrieving a specific detail "from, say, an email, photo or a place you saved in Google Maps", and reasoning across several sources at once. The driving-specific argument is the honest one: this is the situation where digging through your own phone is genuinely not an option.
The apps it can draw on come from a fixed list. Google's help article Connect your Google apps to personalize your Gemini experience, read October 22, 2026, names exactly six and says "For now, only the following Google apps work with Personal Intelligence in Gemini": Contacts, Google Photos (in certain countries), Google Wallet (US only), Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Drive), Search services (Search, Maps, Shopping) and YouTube. Our guide to what Personal Intelligence reads goes through what each one hands over.
Does It Cost Anything
Google names no plan, and that is the most precise way to say it. On gemini.google/overview/personal-intelligence, read October 22, 2026, the question "Who can use Personal Intelligence and where is it available?" is answered with four gates and no price: "rolling out as a beta to eligible users globally, except for the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria", "You must be over the age of 18", "available for personal Google accounts and not for Workspace business, enterprise or education users", and "It works with all models currently available in the Gemini model picker." The strings "AI Pro" and "AI Ultra" appear zero times on that page, and zero times on the help article above.
There is one plan sentence in Google's history for this feature, and it is nine months old. The Gemini release notes entry dated 2026.01.20 introduced Personal Intelligence with "This beta version of Personal Intelligence is rolling out to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S." Google's current pages have replaced the geography in that sentence (US only became global-minus-four) and the account rule, and have dropped the plan clause without saying what replaced it. So the practical answer is that no Google surface published today asks you to pay, and no Google surface has written "free" either. If you want the full picture on where Gemini's paid line actually falls, we track it in is Gemini free.
What You Need Before It Works
Two separate checklists, and people conflate them. The first is for Gemini to talk to you in the car at all. The second is for Personal Intelligence to have anything to say. Both are from Google's help pages, read October 22, 2026.
To get Gemini in the car (source):
| Setup | What Google requires |
|---|---|
| Android Auto from your phone | An Android phone with at least 2 GB of RAM, running Android 11 or newer; Gemini set as your digital assistant; a vehicle that supports Android Auto |
| Car with Google built-in | A Google Account signed in to the vehicle; Gemini enabled as the assistant at Settings > Google > Assistant on the car's screen |
If Gemini is not in that list on your car's screen, Google's instruction is to update the vehicle's software.
To get Personal Intelligence (source): be 18 or over, sign in with a personal Google Account, and have Keep Activity on, which Google states as a hard requirement ("This feature isn't available when this setting is off"). Then each connected app has its own switch behind it: Web & App Activity for Search services, YouTube History for YouTube, Smart features in other Google products for Workspace, and for Photos an eligible country plus Face Groups turned on with your own face selected and Estimate missing locations enabled. That last one is the reason a photo-based request can fail while a Gmail-based one works.
The Thing Google's Own Help Pages Have Not Caught Up With
Two days after announcing Personal Intelligence in cars, Google's help documentation still says it does not run there. The help article Connect your Google apps, re-read live on October 22, 2026, carries this sentence: Personal Intelligence is "Only available in the Gemini mobile app, the Gemini web app at gemini.google.com, Gemini in Chrome (in countries where Gemini in Chrome is available), and Gemini on your smartwatch." The string "Android Auto" appears zero times on that page. The marketing page's own platform line is the same shape: "Platforms: Once enabled, it works across Web, Android, and iOS."
Running the check in the other direction gives the mirror image. The help article Chat with Gemini in your car, read the same day, documents the car experience in full and mentions Personal Intelligence zero times.
We are not treating that as evidence the car rollout is not real. Google's announcement is a primary source with a date on it, and a help centre lagging a launch by two days is ordinary. What it does mean in practice is that if Personal Intelligence does not answer from your Gmail in the car yet, no Google page currently tells you whether that is a staged rollout or an unsupported surface. Google's phrase is "rolling out starting today", which is a gradual release, so the likeliest explanation for a car that gives generic answers is simply that your account has not been reached. We will re-read both articles and correct this section when either one moves.
What Happens If You Leave Personal Intelligence Off
The car keeps working, and Google says so in one sentence rather than burying it: "If you don't use Personal Intelligence, everything in the car still works: You can use navigation, listen to music, make calls, and ask questions, but the answers won't be tailored to you." That is a genuinely reasonable default, and it is worth knowing before you tap through an opt-in prompt on a dashboard while parked.
There is also a quieter protection in the announcement for people whose cars are shared or sold on. Google says cars with Google built-in "only share personal responses when you're in the car with your phone connected." So on a dashboard-native system, the personal layer is tied to your phone's presence rather than to the car's account, which means a valet or a second driver with the car and not your phone does not get your email read out to them.
Two things to think about before you switch it on, neither of them hypothetical:
| Who is affected | What to do now |
|---|---|
| You drive alone and want the flight-gate answer | Turn it on in the Gemini app, connect only Workspace and Search services, leave Photos and Wallet off |
| Your car carries kids, colleagues or passengers | Leave it off, or connect nothing sensitive. Google's own help page warns that Gemini in Android Auto "is available to anyone in the vehicle, including children" |
That second row is Google's own caveat, from the car help article, and it is the one that applies to most family cars. Anyone who can press the steering-wheel voice button can ask the assistant that has your inbox connected to it.
How to Turn It On or Off
In the Gemini app on your phone, not in the car. Google's instruction is that if you have already enabled Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app, "it comes with you into the car", and if you have not, "you can set your preferences anytime in your Gemini settings". The route on the phone is Menu > your profile picture > Personal Intelligence > Connected Apps, where each of the six app groups is an individual toggle you can turn off again later.
There is a per-chat switch too, which is worth knowing for the car even though you cannot reach it while driving: in the text box, open Tools and turn Personal Intelligence off. Google's caveats on that are precise and slightly awkward: Gemini can still use earlier parts of the same chat, the setting sticks for that chat only, and a new chat starts with Personal Intelligence on again. Turning it off also does not stop the chat being saved to your Gemini Apps Activity.
Should You Switch It On
Turn it on if you drive alone most of the time and your frustration is the one Google is describing: your own information is on your phone and you cannot safely get at it. The flight-gate and the "take me to my doctor's appointment" cases are real time savers, and Personal Intelligence is per-app, so you can hand over your calendar and your saved places while never connecting Photos or Wallet.
Leave it off if other people use your car, if your Google Account is a work or school one (in which case Google has already decided for you), or if you are in the UK, the EEA, Switzerland or Nigeria, where it is not offered. And if you are mainly curious whether this is worth paying for: nothing Google published for this rollout asks you to. The gates are your age, your account type and your country, not your subscription.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Gemini in my car now?
Google says Gemini is available globally on Android Auto and on cars with Google built-in as of October 20, 2026. Its help page adds the caveat that Gemini and Android Auto are not available in all languages and regions, so your country and language still decide.
Does Gemini in the car cost anything?
Google names no paid plan for it. The requirements it does publish are being 18 or over, a personal Google Account, and a supported country. The only plan sentence Google ever wrote for Personal Intelligence was a January 2026 beta note naming AI Pro and AI Ultra in the US.
Can Gemini read my Gmail while I am driving?
Only if you connected Google Workspace to Personal Intelligence. Google's example is asking your flight gate and whether the flight is on time, and Gemini pulling both from your confirmation email and a live search. Until you opt in, it has no access to your mail.
Which cars get Gemini Personal Intelligence first?
Android Auto, meaning your phone projecting onto the car screen, from October 20, 2026. Cars with Google built-in, where the software is in the dashboard, get Personal Intelligence in the coming months. Google has published no date for that second group.
Can I use Gemini in my car in the UK?
Gemini itself, yes, where Android Auto and Gemini are supported. Personal Intelligence, no. Google excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Nigeria, so a UK driver gets Gemini in the car but without answers drawn from Gmail, Photos or Maps.
What do I need for Gemini to work in my car?
For Android Auto: an Android phone with at least 2 GB of RAM running Android 11 or newer, Gemini set as your digital assistant, and a vehicle that supports Android Auto. For a car with Google built-in: a Google Account signed in, and Gemini selected in the car's settings.
How do I turn Personal Intelligence off in the car?
In your Gemini settings, not in the car. Google says your apps are not connected until you turn Personal Intelligence on, and you can turn it off at any time there. If you already enabled it in the Gemini app, it follows you into the car automatically.
Does Gemini still work in the car if I say no to Personal Intelligence?
Yes. Google is explicit: navigation, music, calls and ordinary questions all still work, the answers just will not be tailored to you. Declining costs you the personalised replies, not the assistant.
